    Townsend Canal Conveyance Analysis

Picture

Client
: South Florida Water Managament District
(sub-consultant to Carollo Engineering)
Year: 2016-2018

About:
The objective of this study was to evaluate the conveyance capacity of the Townsend Canal after the proposed dredging activities by using a 1D (MIKE11) model. The canal will be reconfigured to safely convey both stormwater runoff and water pumped to the south for irrigation and water storage purposes.
Specifics:
The MIKE11 model was created to consider two sets of cross section data, i.e., before and after the dredging. Structure geometry for the SR80 and the Wooden Pedestrian bridges as well as for the weir structure at the C-43 canal intersection was included. 25- and 100-year return period 3-day duration storms were applied in the model to evaluate the flow conveyance toward the C-43 canal. Pump stations S-470 and S-476 were also considered at their maximum pumping capacity to evaluate flow conveyance coming from the C-43 canal.

Applied Skills:
  • H&H Modeling: Data Processing, Conceptualization, & Setup
  • Design storm simulations
  • Scenario Evaluations

Consulting Areas:
  • Surface water management

Software Applied:
  • MIKE11
  • ArcMap
Outcome:
The proposed design is able to effectively convey the additional water from the C-43 canal and maintain a water surface elevation of approximately 1.0 feet NAVD88 with adequate freeboard north of the Duda pump station.
The comparison of storm event simulation results indicates that the stages and flows in the post-project condition will generally be lower in the Townsend CanaI at the SR80 bridges.  In all cases, the maximum flow velocity under the SR80 bridges is well below the allowable velocity of 10 ft/sec for the Fabriform Mattress as included in the revised FDOT design manual.
