Lower Charlotte Harbor Flatwoods Hydrologic Modeling
Client: CHNEP, Coastal and Heartland National Estuary Partnership (sub-consultant to WSA, Inc.) Year: 2020-2022 About: CHNEP requested to develop a hydrologic restoration plan for the Lower Charlotte Harbor Flatwoods that will promote sheet flow enhancement, restore wetland hydroperiods in the Babcock Webb and the Yucca Pens Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), and improve the timing and magnitude of flows to tidal creeks west of Yucca Pens WMA. |
Specifics:
In support to WSA, the existing MIKE SHE/MIKE 11 model was upgraded, and the domain was extended north. Updated model inputs included rainfall, reference ET, topography, landuse coverage, flow paths and surface water structures, hydrogeological parameters, and observation data from surface and groundwater monitoring stations.
During model calibration, input parameters and model conceptualization were improved. Moreover, hydraulic conductivities and leakage coefficient were adjusted by using a proprietary tool (Adjust dfs2 file) to better match the observation data.

Outcome:
The updated and recalibrated model was used to evaluate a number of scenarios with the objective of restoring wetland hydroperiods in the Yucca Pens WMA and to store water during the wet season that can be released later during the dry season. |
