BCB Real-Time Hydrologic Monitoring-Modeling Services
Client: South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD)
Year: 2015 |
About:
The District asked LAGO to update the BCB real-time system MIKE SHE/MIKE11 model (BCBRTHMS) with current available data and to conduct a recalibration. It was also requested to conduct design storm simulations and to adapt the model to be used in the existing real-time model system. |

Specifics:
LAGO performed a comprehensive model upgrade. More details were added in the MIKE11 network. Topography, landuse, and geologic layer maps were updated in MIKE SHE. All the time series input data were also updated to the 2008-2014 period, which included rainfall, reference ET, well pumping, observed stages and flows, and gate levels. The model calibration consisted of conducting further improvement of model setup and conceptualization, sensitivity tests to calibration parameters, and adjustments of hydraulic conductivities. Design storm simulations with 3-day duration and return periods of 5, 10, 25, and 100 years were applied to the calibrated model. Profiles of predicted peak stage vs bank elevation were produced along main canals, which revealed canal segments where bank over-topping occurs. Finally, the calibrated model was simplified to run faster without significant worsening on the calibration level in order to be used for the real-time system.

Outcome: The BCB model was successfully upgraded and recalibrated. Design storms simulations were conducted, and the simplified model version was delivered to be used as the real-time model in the BCBRTHMS |
